Reboot the PS2, still keeping the the disc inside and the USB connected. Choose Expert Mode from the main menu. Allow the codelist to load. On the following screen, choose ARMAX Evo.

From what I gathered you only had one ActionReplayMAXSettings file. Did you follow steps 2 through 5 exactly?
I think that these steps may be there to create the first settings file. If you don’t mind, I would suggest formatting the memory card and USB drive and try again. The memory card needs to be formatted before installation of FreeMcBoot anyway.
