A few months ago I decided to paint my Defenders of the Realm miniatures. Since I had zero experience, I used the dip method, because it looked pretty simple.

It has been really fun and I've decided I want to do more painting! So I'd like to learn some techniques to make my minitures look better. Like using washes, dryrbushing, layering, mixing and lots of other things I've seen talked about.

So that's my background. My question is: Has anyone used the book 'How to Paint Citadel Miniatures'?

Or does anyone have an opinion regarding it. It looks like it has a lot of useful information and illustrations that would be good for a beginner. But being new I don't know if it's really worth the $50. Anyother suggestions would be welcome as well.

Thanks in advanced. Here's a link for the book.

I got into painting miniatures with the release of Dreadfleet and had a terrible time trying to find useful information for the absolute beginner. Every site I've been to seemed to assume you knew something about painting miniatures or painting in general. I was always left with questions like, 'How much? Then SledgePainter came up with a short (but unfinished) YouTube series on Dreadfleet that sorta fit the bill. My first recommendation would be to watch that series and pick up some tips. My second recommendation would be to pick up some cheap miniatures to practice on. And my third recommendation is to dive headfirst and see what happens.

As far as the Games Workshop guide, I own and consider it a good purchase.although, definitely unnecessary. It offers some good tips for those familiar with painting, but again.leaves out information for the absolute beginner. The DVD is actually really helpful, but not because of the content they were intending to demonstrate. Instead, it showed me things that are often neglected in mentioning e.g. How much to water down paints.

So as a beginner to another beginner, I would pass on the book. The internet will help a little, but practice will ultimately be your best tool. Thanks for the recommendations and advice. I've taken the plunge and the water's great! For my first project I decided to paint my Defenders of the Realm Mini's using the dip method. I've finished 7 of them and have 2 or 3 left. My next project is going to be the Dust Tactics models. Best of luck on your own projects!

Thanks again!
